On a walk in the fall through a nearby savanna, I noticed a rusting metal post amidst tall grasses. A molting male American Goldfinch circled and periodically perched there. The contrast between the bird’s natural softness and the harsh industrial textures of the manmade post intrigued me. Like the post mottled with rust, the bird’s molt is a natural process of transformation and a reminder of the constant state of change in the natural world.
