I took the reference photo for this piece at the Minnesota Zoo. I was excited because close-up portraits and large cats are my favorite things to draw. This piece was challenging because each hair on a lynx is multi-colored; darker towards the root, with a white tip. So the method I used to recreate those hairs was to draw tiny shapes for the negative spaces around the hairs, and leave the areas representing the white tips of the hairs untouched, showing bits of the white of the paper.
