While growing up and living in South Africa, I have always been fascinated by the mid-morning gathering of animals at waterholes. This is one place where all species have to congregate, mostly to quench their thirst, except for predators that lie in wait. The animals always seem to be tense and nervous except for the confident herds of elephant. In this painting I have tried to capture the interaction between the confident stride of a bull elephant approaching and the ever alert and paranoid zebra. I have added in a lurking crocodile to create an extra touch of tension.
