I chose this subject because I see them often at my favorite birding spots in South Florida. The color is one of the things that drew me to paint this amazing bird with its unique characteristics.

When I work in pastel, I look for four values, from light to dark to cover the bare paper. Once that is completed, I do washes in rubbing alcohol or turpentine. Or, I will use watercolor washes. When it’s dry, the fun starts! I use many layers of soft pastel to create the appearance of depth, light and texture, giving the viewer a rich recreation of something that inspires me.
