I saw these Hyacinth Macaws at the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas. They were a very loving pair, constantly preening and nibbling at each other. These macaws are native to Central and Eastern South America. The largest flying parrot species in the world and the largest macaw, their lifespan in the wild is up to 50 years. They are described as “gentle giants” due to their large size and placid nature. Nuts from specific palm trees, fruits, nectar, and various kinds of seeds comprise their diet. The palm nuts they feed on are so hard that it would be difficult to break them with a hammer, yet the hyacinth macaw has no trouble crushing and eating them with its powerful beak.
