I have always been drawn to the interaction of the manmade and natural world. This painting is a continuation of this curiosity. The delicacy of the butterfly is juxtaposed by the strength of the steel knife. The apple is a product of the pollinator’s efforts, with the apple itself mimicking the silhouette of the butterfly in the cutout slice. In the scene, there is a painting on the wall of a tree, bringing the natural landscape back into focus within this little world. There are so many delicate threads in our relationship to nature in the modern era, and this work is one exploration into it.
